Description

Breast pump, milk collector - why not both? We're introducing you to the Shell Wearable Silicone Pump, a convenient blend of our OG Silicone Breast Pumps and the Ladybug Milk Collector! This nifty little device acts as a wearable shell pump, making it ideal for those days you need to pump but have things to do. Simply press the back and attach it to your breast, pop your bra back on, and get on with your day! You can regulate the suction strength with a quick adjustment of the valve.

On the other hand, if you just want to catch a bit of that leakage, pop out the plug so there's no suction, put the Shell into your bra, and passively collect what's leaking out already! It's a win-win for you, no matter your needs. The Shell lies flat on its back when it's time to be emptied, preventing any milk spills, and the easy-pour outlet lets you transfer your precious liquid gold into a bottle or storage container without any mess. Easy to use, easy to clean, the Haakaa Shell is the perfect option for mums who need both a pump and a collector.

Directions

Use as a pump:

  1. Ensure the valve is unobstructed. With the plug closed, centre the main opening over your nipple. It should feel comfortable and your nipple should not be pushing against any part of the Shell.
  2. Press and release the back of the Shell to create suction. Position and pull your bra over the Shell. Make sure it's still firmly in place with no gaps around the edges.
  3. If the suction generated feels uncomfortable, gently press the valve to open it and regulate the suction.
  4. If you feel the suction dropping, press the centre of the back to increase. This suction keeps the milk flowing and may need to be repeated several times while pumping. Be cautious of your milk level before pressing on the pump.

NOTE: Suction can be adjusted by applying different pressure on the back of the Shell. Be sure to keep an eye on the milk level to make sure it doesn't overfill.

Use as a collector:

  1. If you want to use it as a breast pad alternative, you can apply it with no suction – simply press the valve to release all the pressure, or open the plug before placing it over your breast. Secure the Shell in your bra.

Removing & storing milk:

  1. When finished, press the valve to open it and release pressure, then use your finger to break the seal around your nipple.
  2. Lie the Shell on its back while you get ready to transfer your milk.
  3. Pull out the plug from the outlet, then use the outlet to pour the into a prepared storage container before storing.

Cleaning & Care

Wash before and after each use. Although dishwasher safe, we recommend hand washing with warm, soapy water and rinsing thoroughly. To clean the valve, use a small brush or run clean, warm water directly through it to thoroughly flush it out. To sterilise, use a steam steriliser or boil in water for 2-3 minutes. When sterilising, ensure the outlet is unplugged to prevent potential deformation of the silicone. Only soft bristle brushes or soft sponges should be used to clean this product as hard scourers may scratch the surface. Do not use any bleach-based cleaners or tablets to clean or sterilise your Haakaa products. Store product in a cool, dry place and avoid direct sunlight.

  • Before each use, please inspect the valve to ensure it is free from blockages and tears.
  • Do not use the Shell when exercising or operating heavy machinery. Do not lean forward or lie down with the plug open, as your milk may spill out the top.
  • Volume is an approximation and should be used for general reference only.
  • Please ensure you are familiar with your country's guidelines on the safe storage of breastmilk. Ensure your Shell is emptied regularly to store your breastmilk in accordance with these recommendations. Milk collected over extended periods and left at room temperature for too long should not be fed to your baby.

FAQs

As with our Gen 1, 2 & 3 pumps, the Shell works by utilising continuous natural suction. Simply press the back, attach to your breast, ensuring your nipple isn't pressing against the side, then pop your bra back on, release, and let it do its thing!

If you find you've made it a little bit stronger than you're comfortable with, press the valve to let in a bit of extra air – this will decrease the suction level. If, however, you want the suction to be a bit stronger, there's no need to remove and try again. Instead, press on the back of the Shell to push a bit more air out, and the vacuum effect will increase, giving you stronger suction.

There are a couple of differences between the Shell and the Gen 1, 2 & 3 Haakaa pumps you might be more familiar with. First of all is the shape. Rather than a flange that directs milk down into a bottle design, the Shell is a shell-shaped pump that sits right in your bra for discreet use.

The second difference lies in the valve. This tiny little innovation lets you adjust the suction strength as you're using the pump – no more having to remove it if you've attached it with too much or too little suction! To increase the suction level, simply press on the back of the Shell while it's still attached. You can even do this while there's milk in there – just be careful not to push any out. If, however, it's a bit strong and you wish to decrease the level, you can push the valve to open it, letting air in and therefore lowering the suction level.

While the Shell and the Ladybug may both look slightly similar, their functions are quite different. The Shell is an adjustable breast pump that lets you actively express milk from your breasts, while the Ladybug is a passive milk collector – that is, it will collect milk that is already leaking from your breasts rather than having it go to waste in a disposable nursing pad or staining your clothes.

Which one you get will come down to what you need from it. If you plan to express milk, one of our pumps, including the Shell, could be the best option for you. If instead you want to collect leakage and letdown without expressing any more, then the Ladybug is just the thing you need. And if you want to do both? The Shell is perfectly placed to function as either!

If your Shell Pump is losing suction often, it could be due to residue on the silicone. The most common causes of residue forming is either from breastmilk (as breastmilk is high in fat) or lotions that you may have used on your skin.

To improve the suction, make a thick paste of white vinegar and baking soda. Give the pump a really good scrub with this, and leave it to sit with it on for an hour or two.

After this:

  1. Give the pump a good scrub in warm, soapy water.
  2. Bring a pot of 50:50 water and white vinegar to boil on the stove.
  3. Pop the pump in, allowing it to boil for several minutes (2–3 minutes is usually enough) before removing it.

If there is residue that has built up, causing the pump to lose suction, this should help remove it. If you have been using lotions on your skin, ensure they are cleaned off thoroughly before attaching your Shell.

There are many reasons you may be having trouble. First up, ensure both the Shell and your skin are free from residue – milk residue and skin creams & lotions can both affect its ability to form a tight seal. Remove any moisturisers from your skin, and try giving the Shell a good scrub in warm, soapy water. Boiling the pump in a 50:50 mix of water and white vinegar for several minutes then removing and allowing to cool and dry can help, as well as trying the baking soda and white vinegar tip – make a thick paste with these and scrub the pump, especially where it comes in contact with your skin. Leave it on for an hour or two, then go through the soapy water and boiling routine.

If you're having trouble getting the Shell to attach, try pressing the back, then attaching by rolling it upwards from below your nipple until your nipple is fully enclosed – check out our Instagram and TikTok accounts for a video demonstration.

Finally, you may need a pump with slightly stronger suction strength. The Shell has slightly less suction than our Gen 1, 2 & 3 pumps. If attachment isn't an issue, you may need to move up a step when it comes to suction strength to be able to express milk.
