- 35.9% of participants captured 30–60ml of milk per session.
- 75.8% of participants built a milk stash with the Haakaa Silicone Breast Pump.
- Of the 128 participants, 98 answered how the Haakaa Silicone Breast Pump can be improved.
BACKGROUND
The World Health Organization (2025), recommend that all children initiate breastfeeding within the first hour after birth, and continue exclusively breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life. Following the age of 6 months, breastmilk is recommended to be continued alongside solid foods for up to two years or more (WHO, 2025).
Passive silicone pumps (sometimes called “milk collectors” or “passive pumps”) are widely used to capture milk during let-down. The Haakaa Silicone Breast Pump aims to support breastfeeding improving the experience of pumping and expressing for breastfeeding individuals (Gridneva et al., 2023). While high-quality Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) on passive silicone pumps specifically remain limited, adjacent literature underscores principles that matter for participants including comfort, appropriate vacuum dynamics, and fit (flange diameter/inserts). Contemporary mastitis guidance (ABM Protocol #36) warns that excessive milk removal may exacerbate hyperlactation, highlighting the importance of education around the use of passive pumps (Mitchell et al., 2022).
An anonymous descriptive online survey was distributed via email and social media with the aim of examining the experiences of individuals who have used the Haakaa Silicone Breast Pump.
METHOD
Design: Online anonymous consumer survey using ‘Survey Monkey’ distributed through the Haakaa email database and the Haakaa social media profile between 2 July to 10 August 2025.
Total responses: n=128.
Population: Self-selected Haakaa Silicone Breast Pump users.
Analysis: Descriptive statistics. Open-ended responses were grouped into themes.

DISCUSSION
The anonymous consumer survey of 128 Haakaa Silicone Breast Pump users highlights valuable insights in the role of passive silicone pumps in supporting breastfeeding. The results illustrate high participant satisfaction, with 94.5% reporting that they found the pump helpful in collecting or expressing milk and 93.8% stating they would recommend it to others. Furthermore, 75.8% claimed they found the Haakaa easy to clean and over 70% of participants described the pump as comfortable or very comfortable to use, thereby reinforcing the importance of ease of cleaning and comfort in sustaining breastfeeding for families.
The volumes captured per session (most commonly 30-60ml) reinforces the role in passive pumps to supplement breastfeeding through collection of let-down and assist with collection of a breastmilk stash. Further, three-quarters of participants reported building a freezer stash demonstrating the pump’s utility in meeting practical breastfeeding goals, such as storing milk for return-to-work or caregiver involvement. However, education around use for families is essential as passive or active milk removal may inadvertently contribute to oversupply for some users (Mitchell et al., 2022). This is consistent with the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine’s Protocol #36 guidance that excessive milk removal may exacerbate hyperlactation and mastitis-spectrum conditions (Mitchell et al., 2022).
Choice drivers for participants using the Haakaa Silicone Breast Pump were predominantly practical, with “easy to clean”, “convenience” and “travel friendly” being most common. These findings reflect the demand for breastfeeding tools that are low maintenance allowing easy integration into daily life, particularly for busy lifestyles and returning to work (Gridneva et al., 2023). Gifting and recommendation from peers (29.7%), highlight the importance of social validation and brand reputation in shaping consumer behaviour.
Overall, these results support the role of passive silicone pumps as an adjunction to breastfeeding. The Haakaa Silicone Breast Pump is described as a comfortable and helpful tool in capturing otherwise wasted milk, easing engorgement, and building a freezer stash with minimal disruption. The overwhelmingly positive recommendation rate (93.8%) emphasizes Haakaa’s contribution to sustaining breastfeeding for the modern family through providing flexibility and reassurance for mothers.
STRENGTHS & LIMITATIONS
Strengths:
- This survey achieved a relatively high response rate (n=128) in a short timeframe (five weeks).
- It captured both quantitative and qualitative feedback, offering a comprehensive understanding of user experiences.
- The survey population represented a broad age and parity distribution, adding diversity to the perspectives gathered.
Limitations:
- The survey sample was self-selected from Haakaa’s consumer base and social media community, which may over-represent highly engaged and satisfied users.
- Haakaa offered a chance to go into the draw to win a $500 Gift (“Prezzy”) Card for participation, which could have introduced response bias, with participants motivated by reward rather than interest in sharing critical feedback.
- Responses relied on self-report and recall, which may limit accuracy in estimating milk volumes or comfort.
- The lack of a comparison group (e.g., users of other pumps) limits the ability to contextualise findings beyond Haakaa users.
- As an online survey, results may not generalise to all breastfeeding individuals, particularly those with limited internet access or from different cultural backgrounds.
FURTHER RESEARCH
This survey has highlighted the importance of further research in determining objective outcomes on comfort, volume of milk and skin integrity and the oversupply risk in passive pump users.
